French captain receives Selene Award!
Captain Joël Marc, the owner of Selene 66 « Jade », who sailed from New Caledonia to British Columbia and Alaska via Japan, was awarded last week by Selene Yachts the long-range Explorer Award “Pacific Explorer”. « It is with great pride that I accept this prize, which rewards both a magnificent, reliable, and superbly designed Selene boat, « Jade », as well as a French skipper coming from a sailboat background, and whom for the past five years, has been discovering the joys of comfortable motor sailing throughout the Pacific, from the southern tip of New Zealand to the fringes of the Arctic, as well as the shores of Russia and Japan.
The beautiful sailboat that took me from one corner of the Earth to the other, from the seas of Antarctica to South Georgia, was named Savannah. Savannah, is the name of one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, but also of the name of the first motor boat to have crossed the Atlantic. When the British saw it appear over the horizon and approach their coastlines, they thought the ship was on fire. In 1819, Savannah was a source of immense pride for America.
But did you know that a little over a century later, in 1936, a French sailor by the name of Marin Marie, was the first to do a solo crossing of the Atlantic on board the « Arielle », a sturdy motor boat equipped with a 60-horsepower diesel engine? The precursor of Selene yachts, and « Jade », in essence.
Marin Marie is mostly known nowadays as the Official Painter of the French Navy, and some of his paintings can reach up to the 100,000 dollars, and it is for these many reasons that I am moved and filled with pride that your decision fell upon a boat unafraid to cross the high seas with its European crew and French captain.

“Je suis très fier et ému de recevoir ce prix qui récompense à la fois un magnifique bateau, Jade, très bien construit et fiable, et un skipper français, venu tout droit de la voile, qui découvre depuis cinq ans le bonheur de naviguer au moteur, confortablement, tout autour du Pacifique depuis le Sud de la Nouvelle Zélande jusqu’aux confins de l’Arctique en passant par le Japon et la Russie.
J’avais baptisé du nom de Savannah le beau voilier qui m’a amené un peu partout autour de la Terre jusqu’en Antarctique et en Géorgie du Sud.
Savannah est une des plus belles villes des Etats Unis, mais c’est aussi le nom du premier bateau à moteur à avoir traversé l’Atlantique. Quand les anglais l’ont vu arriver du large ils ont cru qu’il était en feu.
C’était en 1819, une immense fierté pour l’Amérique.
Mais savez-vous qu’un peu plus d’un siècle plus tard, en 1936, un marin français, du nom de Marin Marie, fut le premier à effectuer la même traversée de l’Atlantique en solitaire à bord d’Arielle, une robuste vedette équipée d’un moteur diesel de 60 chevaux ? L’ancêtre des Selene et de Jade en quelque sorte.
Marin Marie est plus connu de nos jours comme Peintre Officiel de la Marine et certaines de ses toiles atteignent les 100 000 dollars.
Voilà pourquoi je suis fier que votre choix se soit porté sur un bateau qui n’a pas peur d’affronter la haute mer avec son équipage venu d’Europe et son capitaine français.
